Meet Fritz, the newest member to Anchor Counseling’s therapy team. Fritz is a Bernese Mountain Dog, born in June of 2016. At 5 months old Fritz completed all of his immunizations and began the training process as a certified pet therapy dog. He is growing so fast, gaining almost a pound a day! Adult Bernese Mountain Dogs can reach 110 and 140 pounds. With a calm and relaxed temperament, these ‘gentle giants’ make perfect therapy dogs.

The act of petting our furry friend has been shown in humans to release Oxytocin, AKA the ‘cuddle hormone’. Oxytocin helps relieve stress and anxiety by buffering the stress response. Cortisol, also known as the ‘stress hormone’, has been implicated with all kinds of mental and physical health problems. Oxytocin helps relieve stress by reducing cortisol.

Therapy dogs provide short-term emotional support. Berners are a good breed for this work because of their innate gentleness and ‘huggability’.

Call today to invite our therapy dog to join you on your journey. You don’t have to manage unpleasant emotions alone. Hard work is always easier with a companion in session.

Ask for Fritz by name when you schedule with Teresa Kincaid MA,LMFT.
